MARILYN OMA ANONA writes: With the materialistic person, nothing is meaningful to them except MONEY…

There are so many things I love about myself and I can never trade who I am for another. I can’t begin to count them, I mean the things I love about me because they are too numerous to count.

But I want to talk about one of those things I love about myself today… I love myself too much because I am not materialistic. My happiness in life isn’t dependent on material things and that explains why even in the face of great lack, I am so happy and full of life and energy and you will never know. I may have no kobo in my bank account but will be happier than someone who has a million bucks in his account.

This is one thing I love so much about me. And it explains why I can be so comfortable using a nokia torch or carrying my weave for 2months and still be very happy. It also explains why I don’t go about following men for money. It explains a lot of things. It explains why I work hard and very happy when I am able to fend for myself and give to those around me. It explains why I am not stingy.

Now,money is very important and essential. We can’t do without money but excessive love for anything at all is bad and that includes money. Excessive love for money and the things money can buy is called MATERIALISM.

Can you even begin to imagine what this means and what it does to you? Excessive love for money and what money can buy.
I usually pity MATERIALISTIC folks because they bear too much burden. They are usually restless because they are insatiable. Materialism does a lot of damage to an individual. Yes, that’s true! Let’s face the fact!

Materialism is linked to a lot of mental problems and even physical issues. I prefer to pursue a cordial relationship, family, love , loyalty , faithfulness than pursue money. With the materialistic person, nothing is meaningful to them except MONEY… Can you see how dangerous and harmful this is?

It means a materialistic person can even kill or forget family as long as money is concerned etc. It means a materialistic person isn’t image conscious, doesn’t care about integrity etc as long as money is concerned.

I don’t intend to make this very lengthy… The entire piece will be in my book. But I want you to know these. Materialistic people are usually:

1. Unhappy.
2. Unfaithful.
3. Envious.
4. Insensitive to the feelings of others.
5. They are often greedy.
6. They can’t be trusted and they don’t trust others as a result because they don’t even trust themselves.
7. They are hardly generous except they have something up their sleeves.
8. They indulge in a lot of unhealthy competition making them restless at all times.
9. They don’t know what love is. (the word cupboard love describes the kind of love they believe in).
10. They are prone to depression. This happens when the money refuses to flow.
11. They are victims of poor impulse control.
12. Social anxiety is one of their major problems.
13. Narcissism.
14. Tender to use people for personal gains.
15. Short attention span.
16. Poor self actualization.
17. Love to Gossip and keep Malice.
18. They are highly impatient.
19. They lack understanding.
20. They are usually selfish.
There are more and more of this.

A materialistic person values apart from money, extrinsic factors (image, status, prestige, beauty, and popularity) more than intrinsic factors (being a good person, behaving authentically, having honor).
Few people admit (or even realize) that they value designer clothes more than personal integrity, which is why the truest test of materialism lies in lifestyle evaluation.

Materialism is a bad thing. We all have our faults but this very one is very harmful not just to you, but to your immediate environment and the society at large.

A materialistic person can never make a good leader, boss or clergyman. Selfishness and greed are major traits such people exhibit so how can a good leader be selfish?

A materialistic person who succeeds in becoming the president of a country will never work but keep embezzling public funds just for personal satisfaction.

We all clamour for change but I am of the opinion that the change we seek should start from you and I.
We are the society. We should be the change we want to see by genuinely evaluating ourselves, and trying to change some bad traits that we possess.

We cannot live well if we are materialistic and I want us all to live well!

2015 is almost here, its time to start afresh in a bid to get better!

Live well and succeed, make it work!

MERRY CHRISTMAS

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Mary’s boy child, JESUS CHRIST was born on Christmas day… And man will live for ever more, because of Christmas day!!! *music*

How time flies… Its the end of 2014 already!
And looking back, it feels like 2013 was just yesterday.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Is it that time sped past unusually too fast? Or is it that we all were so caught up with life’s business, struggle, hustle and activities that we didn’t realize when the year came to an end?

Well, what ever the case, its just a few days left to wrap up this amazing and wonderful year 2014…

And as an optimist who is also very enthusiastic about life, I am looking forward to 2015…

*smiling* 2014 like every other year came with a lot of things. Some very beautiful things, some ugly things but no matter how you want to judge 2014, remember that:

1. Change is always constant (what ever you experienced, can change for the better or even get worse in 2015).

2.Remember that without 2014 there will be no 2015.

3. Remember also that life is not a bed of roses (and even if it were, roses have thorns too).

OMALIVING SHOW

OMALIVING SHOW

On my way from Gwarinpa this morning, I met an old friend right in front of Drumstix and had to stop to exchange pleasantries with her. After the usual Nigerian style of greeting ( like “how far?”, “wetin dey happen”, “what do you do” and all) … I asked when she was travelling home ie her hometown (which is our end of year tradition in this part of the world), she told me she won’t travel and I asked why, reminding her that Abuja is going to be very dry (ie empty and deserted as almost everyone would have travelled)…
She then started telling me stories of pain, sadness and anger. Demoralizing stories of how 2014 is the worst year of her life. She kept on stressing, “no good job”, “no money” , “no husband” etc…

All through the time she was going on and on about all the negative things she has experienced… I kept on telling her that all was going to be alright! I kept telling her to calm down.

Hmmm! So much energy expended on complaining and analyzing ugly incidents? To me, its not worth it.

I succeeded eventually in calming her down and taking time to talk to her. Then I quickly remembered an old school mate that passed 4 years ago after our youth service (NYSC).

I asked her, eh hen, how is Ebele? And explained the particular Ebele to her and she turned surprised, “haba! Ebele is late now” …
And I smiled. I told her I knew Ebele had passed on that I asked her that question for her to know that many of our age mates are gone.
They didn’t wish to die, they had dreams and ambition but they died so early. But here you are alive and healthy yet you complain so much about life and woes when there are so many reasons to be thankful to GOD.

I reminded her of the people in various hospitals suffering from one disease or the other. Some of the people in the prisons who may be innocent but punished for a crime they didn’t commit and several other instances.

She started reflecting and muttered ” its true o”

2014 is almost ended, yes! For me, its been an awesome year filled with uncountable blessings. Its true that I don’t have all that I wish to have but then, I have so many other things I didn’t expect to have so soon. And for all I am so grateful and looking forward to the new year 2015.

Like most people, I had “new year resolutions” for 2014 which I didn’t keep…
The most remarkable being to get back to size 8 but I have been on constant 12 and not even exercised at all this year but I have new zeal to improve in the new year and that’s the spirit we all need.

So no matter what ugly experience that is making you so sad, depressed and unfulfilled… Please try as much as you can to focus on the good things you are privileged to have and be part of the joy and love this season.

You may feel that:

1. You are not married.
2. You don’t have a good job.
3. You didn’t make money.
4. You are in debt.
5. You don’t have a new phone or that nice dress or a classy pair of new shoes.
6. You didn’t lose weight like you planned.

Enough of the negative stories, accounts and reports… Don’t dread this season!
Next year is another opportunity to achieve all of these.

Just pray for good health, life, great opportunities and most importantly, the ability to recognize this opportunity when its in front of you.

Here is wishing everyone of you a wonderful and totally joyful Christmas Celebration.

May you be inspired this Holidays and always.

What is it that makes people successful and I mean really successful compared to you or me? Are they smarter or do they work harder? Are they risk takers or have powerful and influential friends?

Over time, studying people, being around people I have come to realize that successful people have same traits. So I decided to write down these traits and comment on each of them with the hope of motivating you and myself in the process. It’s time for me to take my own advice and start on the path to my dreams. I hope to motivate you, by using myself as an example.

When ever I see a successful man or woman, I monitor and ask questions and that way, I am able to come up with these traits as someone who wants to be successful. I discovered that certain traits are common among very successful people, I made a resolution to adopt them and practice them but somehow I usually forget due to the daily hustle and bustle of life. But I have just put them together again and want to share them with you. I hope you take these (not-so-secret) secrets to heart and realize your dreams, whatever they may be.

1. How You Think is Everything.

Always be positive. Think Success, not Failure. Beware of a negative environment.

This trait has to be one of the most important in the entire list. Your belief that you can accomplish your goals has to be unwavering. The moment you say to yourself “I can’t…”, then you won’t. I was always given the advice “never say I can’t” and I will like to strike those words from the dictionary.

I have found out that from time-to-time my attitude waivers. A mentor of mine once said “it’s ok to visit pity city, but you can’t stay and there comes a time when you need to leave”. Positive things happen to positive people.

2. Decide upon Your True Dreams and Goals: Write down your specific goals and develop a plan to reach them.

Write down my dreams and goals? Develop a plan to reach them? You mean like a project plan? Yes, that’s exactly what this means. You may have heard the old adage: A New Years resolution that isn’t written down is just a dream, and dreams are not goals.

Goals are those concrete, measurable stepping stones of achievement that track your progress towards your dreams. For example, my goals are to start a career as a Human resource person, working to achieve that through writing, TV presenting and counselling/therapy. What are your goals?

3. Take Action. Goals are nothing without action.

Be like Nike and “Just do it”. I took action by reaching out and started writing. Every day I try to take some action towards my goals. It may be small, but it’s still an action. Have you taken action towards your goals?

4. Never Stop Learning: Go back to school or read books. Get training & acquire skills.

Becoming a life long learner would benefit us all and is something we should instill in our kids. It’s funny that once you are out of school you realize how enjoyable learning can be. What have you learned today?

5. Be Persistent and Work Hard: Success is a marathon, not a sprint. Never give up.

I think every story of success I read entails long hard hours of work. There is no getting around this and there is no free lunch. But, if you are working towards something that you are passionate about, something you love – then is it really work?

6. Learn to Analyze Details: Get all the facts, all the input. Learn from your mistakes.

I think you have to strike a balance between getting all the facts and making a decision with incomplete data – both are traits of successful people. Spend time gathering details, but don’t catch *analysis paralysis*. (do you know what that means?, i will write about it soon)

7. Focus Your Time And Money: Don’t let other people or things distract you.

Remain laser focused on your goals and surround yourself with positive people that believe in you. Don’t be distracted by the naysayer’s or tasks that are not helping you achieve your goals.

8. Don’t Be Afraid To Innovate: Be different. Following the herd is a sure way to mediocrity.

Follow through on that break-out idea you have. Ask yourself “What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?”

9. Deal And Communicate With People Effectively: No person is an island. Learn to understand and motivate others.

Successful people develop and nurture a network and they only do that by treating people openly, fairly and many times firmly. There is nothing wrong about being firm – just don’t cross the a-hole line. How do you deal with people?

10. Be Honest And Dependable: Take responsibility, otherwise numbers 1 – 9 won’t matter.

I wrote this article about 3 years ago and published for the 1st time June 2013, going through I am amazed at how much I have pursued my goals. Start today.
Enough said.
