I do not believe our problem is unemployment alone, I believe we have so many unemployable graduates as well… Marilyn Anona

Yes the level of unemployment in our country is so high but the truth is, some people especially the people we call graduates are not employable. Have you ever been in an interview panel? If you have then you will know exactly what I am talking about. On thursday last week, I was privileged to be part of an interview panel for a private firm here in Abuja and I was totally embarrassed at the way and manner which our so called graduates give answers to questions. A particular lady was asked the role of an independent secretary and her response was so embarrassing. She said an independent secretary is always on her own. When asked again the role of a personal assistant, she said a personal assistant carries her oga’s bag. This is such a shame! Now, this lady is a Nigerian graduate from the university of Benin. Another lady who said she studied geology at the university of Jos could not write a letter. Most of the applicants dressed wrongly to the interview. How can an adult who has passed through the four walls of the university put on leggings to an interview. Now my question is, why are most Nigerian graduates so unemployable? What are the reasons for this? How can it be curbed? We keep blaming the government and our leaders and i understand people’s frustration and anger. No one can seem to figure out whose responsibility it is to get us out of this economic mess. Some think it’s entirely government’s problem to fix. But I think we also have a serious role to play by working on ourselves. Doing our own part, building our selves so that we can fit into the existing jobs even though they are not enough. We need to boost ourselves. I decided to dig deeper, looking to better understand the problem. I did my homework so that I could share with you what hiring managers are looking for. Here’s what they had to say: 1. For all of us: I. There are jobs out there. If you don’t look for a job every day, you aren’t going to get a job. There are lots of jobs out there. Find them.
II. If you don’t know how to use the Internet to help you find websites that can help you find work, then go to your local employment office and get help.
III. Take advantage of free skills training classes to make yourself more employable. IV. People hire people that they like. Be likable. 2. For entry level and skilled labor positions: I. Come prepared to show off your skills. Learn what you can about the tools of the trade before you go for the interview.
II. If you have no skills, show that you are eager, willing to work hard and willing to learn.
III. Show up on time. There is no excuse for coming in late on a regular basis.
Not showing up to work, not calling in, having excuse-upon-excuse for your lateness/absence/lack of focus, and not being prepared, are the top reasons that most workers don’t make it past the first week.
IV. Be decent, attentive and respectful.
V. Be able to explain what you want to get out of the job. Why are you there? (Hint: Money and benefits are not the best answers.). I do not believe our problem is unemployment alone, I believe we have so many unemployable graduates as well. Please share your thoughts and opinions. Be Enlightened! Be Inspired!! Be Motivated!!!

  1. Very true…. We produce so many graduates below average… Dis is possible due to the fact that some people pay deir way through the university, not gaining anythiing more than a certificate. So therefore so much graduates but of less quality, that’s y our educational system is in a poor shape.

  2. My opinion is most people go for interview without been prepared, maybe due to lack of time because some get notification for an interview a day before the interview, which is not suppose to be.
And there are thousands of unemployed youths seeking for job opportunities but few vecancies, and every year more graduates join the labour market which makes unemployment rampant.
These days there are people who go for interviews with letters from top government officials, and won’t even prepare for the interview or test due to the fact that they have a letter which would garantee them the job and the qualified applicants don’t get the job.

    • I want to make clearer. What the writer said is so self explanatory. There are things you prepare, and there are things you don’t prepare about. Take for instance, the lady that said a permanet secretary carries the ogas bag, does not know what a permanent secretary is. Had she know it, there is no preparation for that. How can urgency make you wear leggings to interview. Dear, urgency can cause lateness, but can take away the virtue in you.

  3. ℓ̊ concur with ♈ōϋя assertion †нα† †нε govt isn’t ² blame totally ƒσя †нε rate σƒ unemployment in †нε country. Nigeria needs α lot σƒ reorientation for different spheres σƒ its citizens.

  4. That part where a lady wore leggings was funny.. But true, our so called graduates actually ignored a lot of simple principles during school…

  5. Nice one Oma, I completely agree with you. The problem is not just unemployment but failure on the part of the youth to package themselves. Thumbs up Marilyn

  9. Another explanation put forward for the unenployable graduates is the absence of strong, transparent and credible Universities, and again some how, deeply embedded in their psyche is an inability to embrace self-awarness and improve their own lot in life without guidiance(I call it ‘shallowness of the mind’).Once again Marilyn Oma Anona kicks out the traditional piety that unemployment is high in Nigeria.Nice one Ms Posh.

  10. I believe if the youths don’t have a Job, they should create one for themselves … There’s a lot of needs in this country they can meet.

  11. This has always been the complain of employment agencies and firms,I believe that in a country where people buy results, where lecturers make students memorise their notes without proper understanding of their course work,we will continue to graduate educated illiterates, idiots with degrees and thugs who can bid high for grades..thus,we have graduates but most of them are truly unemployable..

  12. The fact that some people don’t do well in interviews doesn’t mean they in particular, belong to those group of umemployable graduates. Due to the high level of unemployment, when job vacancy goes to the public, graduates of different fields tend to apply with little or no knowledge of what they are applying for, and in most cases they are not given enough time to prepare for them prior to the notification of the date of interview. So I don’t think I agree fully with you, tho I like the “hiring managers’ section/advice.

    • Thanks for your contribution! In everything we do, there is what we call basic knowledge. When you lack that, your are obviously not qualified. Again, applying for just any job is a trait of someone who is unemployable. How can you go about applying for any job you see. It means you have no direction in the first place and as such, no focus.

  13. I must commend you for this piece, your points are in order and are quite relevant to job seekers as well as experienced graduates, I would like to contact you via email, if it’s okay with you, thanks and God bless.

  14. Wow! What a way to start d new yeah courtesy of posh! So sad d situation we found our young graduates lacking basic job interview skills, too bad! I think our young lads needs to improve themselves fast. Sharp sharp! HNY posh({})

  16. What an inspiring write up. After reading this, I examined myself again and found out that am faulty myself. This is so true. Writer, you are a researcher and a philosopher indeed. More greese to your elbows.
