There has been controversy over the extent to which reality television truly reflects reality. It is supposed to feature unscripted situations, documents actual events and usually features unknowns instead of professional actors. However, various shows have additionally been accused of using fakery in order to create more compelling television, such as having premeditated storyline and in some cases feeding participants lines of dialogue, focusing only on participants’ most outlandish behaviour, and altering events through editing and re-shoots. The truth is that, reality is a misnomer in this so called reality TV programmes. First of all, the environment is not all that real. What is real about for instance keeping youths in a place for 3 months? In competition-based programs such as Big Brother and Survivor, and other special living environment shows like The Real World, the producers design the format of the show and control the day-to-day activities and the environment, creating a completely fabricated world in which the competition plays out. Producers specifically select the participants and use carefully designed scenarios, challenges, events, and settings to encourage particular behaviours and conflicts. Mark Burnett, creator of Survivor and other reality shows, has agreed with this assessment, and avoids the word “reality” to describe his shows; he has said, “I tell good stories. It really is not reality TV. It really is unscripted drama. But what are the sole aim of some of this reality TV shows especially the BIG BROTHER AFRICA that most people can’t afford to miss. Yes I know that Reality television has the potential to turn its participants into national celebrities, at least for a short period, what becomes of you later depends on you. But my concern here and today is what are the aims and objectives of BIG BROTHER AFRICA? Some say its to unite AFRICA.

Please how does BIG BROTHER AFRICA achieve this unity. Some people decided to share their opinion:

BRUNO (Banker, Abuja): My question is…… How does winner emerge? What’s the criteria? Do you become a winner by gossiping running people down and back biting?.. How sad! How about coming up with more intelligent reality shows…..where people will get to compete using their talents, skills and what have you? .Rather than bring adults together to come satisfy their sexual urge in public, forgetting their homes and roots, all just to win what? It’s insensitive, devilish, corrupt and uneducative. Plus it’s an avenue to initiate people. God help them.

ADAOBI (Self employed, port Harcourt): I hate that thing called BBA, I believe people organising that BBA are people of Low self esteem. You just watch people fooling around and at thee end of the day you pay them. There are better things the organisers can do with their money. There are many areas they can invest their money, make their profit and still impact values to the society at large.

NANCY ( Student, Benin City): Never liked BBA, I personally think its controlled by the illuminati, its symbols everywhere in the house. UGO( Banker, Abuja): It’s just a game which teaches patience, understanding, bonding etc and what is wrong with people understanding other cultures and living with it. Everyone gets to meet someone and fall in love which will still lead to some things.

IFEOMA (Lagos): Just love the show, it doesn’t add much to me but I just love it. Its entertaining. DEJI ( IT Specialist Abuja): Time wasting, meant for jobless people that have got flare for just anything life and people bring to them….

DAZZY SAM ( student, warri): Its a messed up programme with no real idea behind it.. Just to show how stupid Africans can be when copying from the western world. Am more amazed by those seating down watching it.. Seat down for hours watching people talk, have sex, drink, party Απϑ lie why not put cameras in their own homes and video themselves. These are some of the opinions viewers of BBA have about the reality TV show. What is your own opinion? Do you think the show is good enough? Do you think it should be improved? We need your opinion!
